The Salt Body
Every salt-bearing being carries an internal salt body — the part of a living thing that stores identity, species memory, emotional residue, and salt affinity. It is not the same as a soul, though some religions treat it as one.
Damage to the salt body causes memory loss, loss of language or bloodline power, emotional numbness, possession by foreign memory, salt addiction, identity splitting, the inability to bind oaths, and death without ancestral record. Salt physicians, Ghalvorn flesh-shapers, Ossarym memory bankers, and Xonthos black-salt readers each understand it differently.
Affinity, and the Fear of Adaptation
Most species bond naturally with one major salt type — war species to red, navigators to blue, religious orders to gold, memory bankers to white and bone, prophets to the edge of black.
Multi-salt compatibility is rare and politically dangerous. Adaptive salt — the human gift — is among the most feared abilities in the Veil, because it lets a single being or bloodline interface with categories that were never meant to touch. Most species master one door. Humans break walls.
The Cost
Salt power is never free. Its tolls include memory bleed, emotional overload, dehydration, salt fever, foreign-identity intrusion, oathlock, route sickness, ancestral possession, desire corruption, war hunger, biological regression — and, for black salt, Notice. The more ancient the salt, the greater the cost.
The Major Salts
White salt holds personal memory, language, identity, skill, and trauma — too much of it and you remember lives you never lived. Red salt holds violence and battle instinct, and can trap a nervous system permanently in combat. Blue salt holds maps, routes, and Brine Road scars, and can leave victims walking toward places that do not exist.
Gold salt holds law, oaths, titles, and bloodline legitimacy — a broken gold-salt vow can collapse the salt body. Green salt holds biological and evolutionary memory, and can wake older, extinct forms inside the living. Bone salt holds the dead — final memories, last words, ancestral residue — and the Unfinished sometimes refuse to dissolve.
Black salt is god-salt: dead gods, Dem-God fragments, erased timelines, pre-creation memory. It remembers the user back. It is not passive — it notices. Silver salt holds reflections and false selves; ash salt holds collapse and extinction; pearl salt holds oceanic and planetary memory older than any single mind.
The Salt Arts
The disciplines have many names — Salt Arts, Brinecraft, Saltwork, Recall, Resonance, Sacred Extraction. Tasting samples salt-memory through tongue, blood, skin, or breath. Brining infuses salt into a body, weapon, contract, or machine. Recall pulls stored memory out; Binding uses gold salt to create enforceable commitments; Extraction removes salt from body, ocean, soil, or bone.
The deeper disciplines belong to specific Houses: Embodiment (living sync with Voidweavers), Unremembering (Morcant erasure), Causal Calculation (Qorath probability), Atmospheric Memory (the human Breath Gift), Desire Memory (Veyrith emotional salt), and Forbidden Recall (Xonthos black-salt interpretation). Forbidden Recall is never safe.
The Seven Laws of Salt
First: salt remembers what life cannot afford to carry forever — a living mind forgets to survive; salt preserves to endure. Second: salt does not distinguish between truth and experience — a lie repeated with enough conviction can become salt-truth, which is why memory records are politically lethal.
Third: salt can be refined, but never made innocent — purification removes instability, not history. Fourth: the older the salt, the less it obeys the living — ancient salt begins to respond like a mind. Fifth: salt remembers the body differently than the mind — a ruler may rewrite public history, but the bone salt of the dead may still accuse.
Sixth: salt power always costs — memory, identity, water, blood, years, names, sanity, or divine attention; anyone who claims otherwise is selling something. Seventh: salt can be owned legally, but never completely — buried memory resurfaces, edited records bleed, stolen salt rejects its owner. This is why every salt empire is unstable beneath its own beauty.
The Fifteen Salts
Beyond the famous seven, imperial classification recognizes fifteen major salts. White holds the person; red holds violence; blue holds the way; gold holds law; green holds the body; bone holds the dead; black holds the gods.
Then the subtler eight: silver holds reflection and false selves; ash holds ruin and collapse; pearl holds oceans, tides, and drowned cities; breath holds speech, song, and storm — the human Kaelvorix gift; iron holds weapons, tools, and the hand that killed; glass holds sight and stored light; root holds bloodline, lineage, and inherited curse; and star holds the heavens, cosmic weather, and how small every throne truly is.
Most carry a saying. 'White salt remembers the face; bone salt remembers the last breath.' 'Blue salt is not a map — it is a memory of arriving.' 'Gold salt does not care if the oath was fair; it cares if the oath was witnessed.' And of black: 'It does not answer questions. It decides whether you deserved the question.'
The Salt Body, in Layers
Scholars divide the salt body into layers, each holding a different depth of self: Surface salt (daily memory and social identity), Blood salt (family inheritance and instinct), Bone salt (deep identity and death-trace), Breath salt (vows, fear, and airborne emotion), Name salt (the signature tied to recognition), Shadow salt (repressed shame and hidden selves), Crown salt (legal and oath identity imposed from outside), and Deep salt — the oldest inner layer, which may hold pre-birth impression, divine scars, and species-level survival.
Damage takes named forms: memory bleed, salt hollowing, oathlock, war hunger, route drift, desire burn, bone crowding, Black Notice — and, after the Unsalted Dark, the clearing that erases the salt body's ability to hold record at all.
Cost, Corruption, and Crime
Because salt rewards intensity, the economy quietly rewards suffering — red salt rises before war, bone salt during plague, gold salt during succession crises. Some markets encourage the very tragedies they profit from.
Salt addiction follows every salt: nostalgia from white, war from red, prophecy from black. And salt crime is its own body of law — memory theft, identity forgery, oath poisoning, ancestral fraud, unlicensed extraction, and salt slavery through debt and oathlock. The wealthy are fined in Measures. The poor are fined in selfhood.
How Salt Was Discovered
Salt was not discovered once but in awakenings. In the First Brine, salt and memory were one substance and could not be 'found.' Only when that ocean collapsed did memory crystallize into matter — and post-Brine beings touched crystals singing with events no living thing had lived, and thought they were touching gods.
Then came the discoveries: the dead speaking from burial salt; oceans holding the songs of drowned cities; battlefields changing the soldiers who slept on them; navigators tasting the memory of arrival; rulers binding promises into gold; healers reading the body's past in green. Each awakening brought a moral crisis that has never been answered — and, in the end, discovery became control, as the Bastion Communion classified, taxed, and weaponized it all.
